IN CHARACTER
Name: Mei-Ling Zhou
Canon: Overwatch
Canon Point: post-Recall
Age: 31

History: Do you want to build a snowman?

Personality: Mei is a remarkably chipper young woman who always tries to see the bright side. Her manner is often happy and carefree despite the seriousness of the situation. It could almost border on flippant, were she not so genuine. An occasion where she accidentally froze her arm solid for several days is considered simply "embarrassing" to her, instead of traumatic like it would be to others. Being cryofrozen for (possibly) near a decade has likely had a big impact on her but so far, we've seen no indication of that. In fact, the only vague mentions of it come from her merrily saying she needs to catch up on her favorite shows and that Mercy hasn't aged a day. It seems that in the face of adversity, Mei is a pillar of positivity.

The work she's doing is very important, but even she admits that the science of climatology can seem boring to others. Her goal is to preserve the world for the future while keeping people updated on her progress through her journal. Though this gives her a connection to the outside world, Mei is now doing her environmental research alone. It can be dangerous out there, but nothing seems to faze her. Cold weather, impassable routes, and more are all just a part of the journey to her. When given the choice between the easy way and the hard way, Mei takes the hard way because it's more rewarding to her. She'd rather walk back from the middle of nowhere than take a helicopter because she doesn't want to be cooped up inside anymore. After being trapped at Ecopoint: Antarctica after a polar storm, no one can blame her for preferring the open air instead of being closed in.

For her, her scientific experiments aren't just a job, they're a passion. She's shown gushing over her experimental tools and the fact that she gets to do science, though she realizes her enthusiasm over the subject can seem lame to others. Still, with the other Overwatch environmental research points shut down and their data mysteriously lost, Mei is now the foremost expert on climatology and is seemingly fighting a one woman crusade to discover what is happening to the world's climate and what can be done to save it. The nonchalant way she mentions her achievements displays how easily this all comes to her. To be such an expert at her age suggests she's most likely of a genius level intellect. Adding to this is the fact that she can fluently speak and write in at least two languages and possibly more. She even corrects Winston the resident genius scientist by telling him one of his equations is wrong.

Her sweetness is clearly seen in how she interacts with others. Despite the tension in the world between humans and omnics, Mei appears to have no bad history with them as indicated by her acceptance of Bastion. She openly admires other characters and they in turn admire her for the adventures she's been on around the world while collecting data. In fact, the only indication we have of Mei not being openly accepting of everyone is in how she treats Junkrat. She recognizes from his behavoir that he's "nothing but a no-good bully" and asks how he can look at himself in the mirror. This indicates some kind of history with people like him, either in their attitude or actions, about which Mei won't stay silent. With her intellect and positive nature, it's possible she endured bullying growing up, or perhaps saw it happening to others and as someone who greatly values the earth and wants to preserve it, she doesn't want to see it fall to bullies who step all over others. She'll make a stand and tell them off without fear. She says others have inspired her, but she in turn inspires others with her fearlessness.

Contracts: Mei would agree to stay because of the opportunity for adventure and learning new things. She wants to save the earth, but there's no harm in seeing other worlds while she's stuck here, right? Maybe she can help some people along the way.

Abilities/Skills: She's skilled in science and math, and is fluent in several languages. She also has a great deal of stamina, as she treks out into the wilderness alone for weeks and months at a time. Her intellect has allowed her to construct several pieces of equipment to help her in her travels, but they can also be used as weapons harnessing the power of ice.
  • Endothermic Blaster & Icicle - Mei's blaster unleashes a concentrated, short-range stream of frost that damages, slows, and ultimately freezes enemies in place. Mei can also use her blaster to shoot icicle-like projectiles at medium range.
  • Cryo-Freeze - Mei instantly surrounds herself with a block of thick ice. She heals and ignores damage while encased, but cannot move or use abilities.
  • Ice Wall - Mei generates an enormous ice wall that obstructs lines of sight, stops movement, and blocks attacks.
  • Ultimate Ability: Blizzard - Mei deploys a weather-modification drone that emits gusts of wind and snow in a wide area. Enemies caught in the blizzard are slowed and take damage; those who linger too long are frozen solid.

    Strengths/Weaknesses:
    Strengths:
  • a positive attitude
  • ability to get along with almost anyone
  • an above average intellect, especially in science and math
  • willing to work hard

    Weaknesses:
  • sometimes a little too trusting
  • works too hard and doesn't know when to take a break
  • very harsh on those she sees as bullies
  • gives the air of not taking things seriously

    Items:
  • parka
  • endothermic blaster with attached water tank
  • her droid Snowball

    Hiya!

[ Mei sees no reason not to be friendly right off the bat. They're all in the same situation, right? ]

My name's Mei. I'm sure you're all getting tired of us new people introducing ourselves and asking all kinds of questions, but I hope you'll be all right with me asking one more. Have any of you noticed any strange weather patterns yet on this planet? You see, I'm a climatologist and I figured if I'm stuck here, I may as well make the most of it! It's not Earth, but I can still keep myself busy by doing research, right?

Anyway, thanks for listening! I hope to get to know you all better soon.
